latest movie to premier in London Ibu in Sierra Leone has been rated 10
out of 10 by a major film critic for its quality and has fuelled hopes
that Nigerian films can finally break into the European mainstream.
Over recent years, Nollywood has stepped up its attack on the European film market, with at least one premier being shown a month in London. However, so far, none of them has gone on to be a box office hit or attract substantial numbers of non-Africans, they way say Slumdog Millionaire has.
Film critics are hopeful about Ibu in Sierra Leone though as the wit and sagacity of John Okafor, who acts Mr Ibu in the film had the audience in stitches throughout. Shown at the Odeon Cinema in Greenwich in southeast London on Friday, Ibu in Sierra Leone starred Mr Okafor with award-winning actress Fatima Jabbe, who was recently voted the best female actress at the African Oscars in Washington DC, as his wife.
Among those that attended the premier included Edward Turray the Sierra Leonean high commissioner to the UK and Ireland. Produced by Collins Pearce and directed by John Solo, the movie was shot in Freetown and features other Nollywood stars like Ifunanya Igwe, Alunette Karama, Jeneba Pearce and Salami Carew.
Nollywood movie critic Babs Carew, said the film was top class and the sound and picture quality were of a very high standard. He added that he spoke to numerous people randomly and some Nollywood UK industry members and they were all anonymous that it was a good movie.
Mr Carew said: "I score this movie a 10 out of a possible 10. This is a rare thing for me to do as the sound and picture quality must be right, there must be a story line, the cast must be right and bring together the story and there must be an ambiance in the movie.
"The question is would I recommend this movie as those I interviewed at the end of the movie seem to be in one accord and I would recommend you to watch this movie whenever it is being shown again. I must commend the producer Collins Archie-Pearce as this movie was well researched, with little things as the numbers of bullets in a gun being researched is commendable."
Ibu in Sierra Leone is a witty story about a ruthless crime boss who for many years has been the chief mastermind behind the violent spate of criminal activities across Sierra Leone, fixing boxing bouts. Known as JK, this crime kingpin has managed to stay one step ahead of the police but he finally comes unstuck when he tries to fix a fight involving Nigerian heavyweight champion Ibu and in the ensuing plot, Ibu finally meets up with his long-lost 21-year old daughter.
Most Nollywood watchers have criticised African film producers for not paying enough detail to minor details such as sound, picture quality, sub-titles and historical facts over the years. They believe not focusing enough attention on these finer details are what have prevented Nollywood films from breaking into the mainstream European industry but hopefully, Ibu in Sierra Leone can break this mould.
